Boarding Standardbred Race Horses, weanlings, weanlings to yearlings to include yearling sale prep., broodmares, mares and foals, broodmares in foal, or just plan to retire and board your race horse?
Let's begin with “The Legacy of a great Kentucky Standardbred Horsemen” - Bart Glass, and his beloved world-famous horse farm. Walco Farms is right here in the heart of Central Kentucky and will live on due to Bart's sons' dedication to Walco Farms, and the racing industry. Sons Bart and Jim strive every day to keep the Standardbred industry alive and relevant today; not just to emulate their father "Big Bart" but continue to build upon his legacy, and the future of Standardbred Racing.
Bart was a consultant for both The Kentucky Standardbred and The Lexington Selected Sales companies, and for many individual owner/breeders over his long, extensive career. Beginning in 1981 Bart traveled constantly as a selector/consultant/inspector for The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale which as we know is the most successful Yearling Sale ever. Armed with limited number of spots available for the yearling sales; Bart really knew how to pick them – winner after winner – came through that sale ring. Bart became one of the most respected/revered experts on conformation, breeding, and the selection of excellent horse flesh in the Standardbred industry.
He consulted, he educated, he sparked an interest, and he helped along some of the biggest owner/breeder/winners in the business today. Many of the horses that he selected became winners of The Meadowland Pace, The Little Brown Jug, The Ohio Sire Stakes, The Kentucky Sire Stakes, etc., and their dams and sires are still producing winners to this day. Some say that Bart could see into the future, but all that he ever cared about was his clients and the horses. Bart cared about helping his clients purchase, sale, and breed the best possible stock that he could help them acquire, thus contributing to his client's success in breeding/racing a great racehorse. Bart started boarding racehorses at Walco Farms in order to help his clients find the Kentucky Bluegrass advantage for themselves.
Just ask Mr. Bruce Brinkerhoff, and he will confirm that Bart was an excellent teacher, and mentor. Bart consulted for Mr. Al Libfeld who called Bart a great friend, advisor, and a visionary. Bart consulted for Mr. Marvin Katz, Mr. Sam Goldband, Mr. Richard Arnold, and advised countless others along the way. Many of Bart's clients wouldn't buy, sale, or breed anything without consulting him and this continued for over 30 years.
Bart has also owned some winners of his own like Hez Striking (who is still trotting around Walco Farms enjoying his retirement at 26 years young), Hesza Laser, Metropolitan, Scootin Mercedes, Lady Wesgate, Southern Magnolia, Sweet Baby Jate, Laggapalooza, and Tallulah Belle just to name a few. But his clients interest always came first which left little time for his own horse breeding/racing interests.
Bart's sons stayed at the farm to take care of the day-to-day boarding, and care of MANY famous racehorses – layups from the track, weanlings to yearlings, hundreds of yearlings were sale prepped at Walco Farms, mares and foals, retired horses from the track, etc... They also were taught to be excellent horsemen; they also garnered a wealth of knowledge from their Dad and are still utilizing this knowledge today.
Bart Glass and Jim Glass work extensively with all owners and breeders to provide and maintain some of the best boarding facilities in the Bluegrass. Walco Farms has boarded and cared for some of the greatest Standardbred Racehorses in the business thus developing into one of the most respected boarding facilities in Central Kentucky. We are not as large as some of the big farms in Lexington, but this just means that we can provide more one on one care for your horse.
Not only have we boarded Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana bred sire stake horses, but Walco Farms has also had many grand circuit horses over the years, some from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and even as far away as Canada. Many of the horses that were boarded here at the farm went on to became winners of The Meadowland Pace, The Kentucky Futurity, The New Jersey Sire Stakes, Ohio Sire Stakes; they have also raced and won at the Red Mile - just to name a few. Their dams and sires are still producing winners to this day.
Our barns have always been full to capacity with no room to spare anywhere. We have boarded for the some of the same clients for over 25 years, and no one could foresee the retirement and health issues of our clients. We are grateful to have had so many wonderful clients over the years. For example, Greenshoe, Jailhouse Jesse, French Riviera, French Cafe, Ms Prada, Ariana G, ANATIVENEWYORKER, French Perfume, Easy Rider, Enjoy The Show, I Own The Road, My Sun And Stars, Princess Nala, Sasha Fierce, Wine Bar, Rule Of Law, American Beauty, Casing Tail, and many many others were yearlings here at Walco Farms. Dream Away stayed here, Dieberspace was here, Creamy Mimi, Crack Shot, Twin B Fierce, Yo Tillie, Brandon Blvd, Bricco, Grande Via, Gala, Topville Lucky, Pink Hermes, Che Bella, Iconic Beauty, Moonlight Miki, Century Love, Sir Perseverance, Designed To Be, Esme, Strangerinthenight, Idyllic Stranger, The Ice Princess, Viking Princess, French Bistro, She's Moni, Two Martinis, and many many other GREAT horses all spent a lot of time at Walco Farms.
What does that mean for you if you are looking to board a Standardbred racehorse? That means that your horse can live on, graze on, run on, play on - the very same ground that has helped to produce MANY of the best horses that ever placed a hoof on a racetrack. Plus, everyone knows that the best water, limestone, and grassing pasture for horses is right here in Central Kentucky.
ANOTHER MAJOR advantage that Walco Farms can provide for you is as follows: one of the requirements for a foal to be eligible for The Kentucky Sire Stake program in Kentucky is that 1) the dame must be registered with the USTA, Standardbred Canada, or other appropriate international harness racing governing agency. And 2) The dame must have resided in the State of Kentucky for a period of not less than 180 days in the calendar year of conception. For more information please view – horsemen.ustrotting.com under Kentucky Standardbred Development Fund and Kentucky Standardbred Breeders' Incentive Fund for 2- and 3-Year-Old Pacers and Trotters. So let us board your mares in foal right here at Walco Farms to help your foal become Kentucky Sire Stake eligible. The mares at least 180 day stay with us while she is in foal will help to make the foal Kentucky Sire Stake eligible in other words, along with meeting all the other eligibility requirements. Most usually the foals/yearlings that are dual eligible will bring more money in the sale ring. Who doesn't like more money when or if you decide to sale?
